One of the most thoughtful philosophers to approach technology from a deterministic, and some have even argued fatalistic, position is Jacques Ellul. Professor at the University of Bordeaux, Ellul authored some 40 books and hundreds of articles over his lifetime, the dominant theme of which has been, according to Fasching (1981), "the threat to human freedom and Christian faith created by modern technology". Ellul''s constant theme has been one of technological tyranny over humanity. As a philosopher and theologian, Ellul explored the religiosity of the technological society.

The Frenchman''s life has continued to exemplify the manner in which the gospel frees us from convention and conformity and liberates us for a radical engagement with God and the world. A member of the underground resistance in France during the Nazi occupation, Ellul startled fellow-citizens at war''s end by acting as lawyer on behalf of the very collaborators who would have tortured and killed him had they uncovered him during hostilities. The reason he gave was that collaborators were being treated as savagely in peacetime camps as the Nazis had treated wartime resisters.

Wylie-Kellermann Bill Jacques Ellul: A Hopeful Pessimist
Personally, I was introduced to Ellul''s writing as a seminarian through Dan Berrigan, who was then reading the signs of the time with the Book of Revelation in one hand and Jacques Ellul''s Presence of the Kingdom (1948) in the other. Presence was Ellul''s postwar manifesto~and nearly five decades later it still rings true with an uncanny discerning prescience.
